The Ngaben ceremony is a corpse burning procession in the tradition of the Hindu community in Bali. Ngaben comes from the word beya which means stock or ngabu which means to become ashes.
The purpose of Ngaben is to purify the spirits of deceased people and return the elements that form the gross human body or Panca Maha Bhuta to Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa or God. The Ngaben ceremony is also a manifestation of the family’s sincerity in letting go of the person who has died.
